Airservices Australia (Airservices) is a government-owned corporation providing safe and environmentally sound air traffic control management and related airside services to the aviation industry. Airservices controls 11 per cent of the world’s surface. Airservices manages air traffic operations for around 63 million passengers on more than 4 million domestic and international flights every year. The aviation industry also relies on Airservices for aeronautical data, telecommunications, navigation services and aviation rescue and fire fighting services. Airservices employs around 3000 staff, including approximately 900 air traffic controllers, working from two major centres (located in Melbourne and Brisbane) and 26 towers located at international and regional airports.
Airservices Australia has a requirement to replace an existing SCADA system that currently interfaces with over 180 Field Devices consisting of Remote Telemetry Units (RTUs) and Remote Control Monitoring Systems distributed at over 100 sites across Australia. The replacement system will directly integrate with the existing Field Devices. The existing SCADA system is known as the National Technical Monitoring System (NTMS).
The purpose of the NTMS is predominantly monitoring the status of the systems used to provide Airservices’ core services to the aviation industry. The system comprises of over 16,000 Data Points distributed nationally with around 10% of the points capable of control functionality.
The general scope of the National Technical Monitoring System (NTMS) Replacement Project is for the provision of SCADA system software and hardware, configured or customised to meet requirements including design of interfaces to existing equipment and systems, installation, configuration, testing, transition and provision of support services including maintenance, training and spares.
