The Department of Labour plays a key role in ensuring New Zealand has a skilled workforce and productive, well-functioning workplaces. It is currently involved in a change process to provide better quality and more integrated information and services to meet the needs of today’s labour market.
The Department provides services to the Government through four portfolios - Labour, Immigration, Employment, and ACC. It has three major delivery arms:
• Workforce: assessing skill needs and providing immigration services.
• Workplace: focusing on high quality work and productive workplaces and providing employment relations and health and safety services.
• Work Directions: developing regional labour market knowledge and providing internal strategic direction.
These are supported by two centralised Groups – Legal and International Group and Corporate Group.
The Department is planning the replacement of one of its core operational business systems that supports Workforce operations. It is proposed that a formal procurement project take place during budget year 2010/11 with the implementation scheduled to begin in 2011.
